Why are weight loss supplements dangerous for those with thyroid disease?
March 9th, 2010Why are most weight loss supplements dangerous for people who are suffering from a thyroid disease? Is this reason still substantial for those whose thyroid is regulated with medication?
They can be dangerous because alot of them contain ephedra. Ephedra can affect your heart rate and blood pressure, things that are already slightly unstable because its being controlled thyroid replacement hormones, such as synthroid.
what is the best weight loss supplement to take?
March 9th, 2010What weight loss pill or supplement has been proven to be highly effective in Australia?
unless you are using it with exercise and a good healhy diet, there is no good one. You truthfully don’t need to waste your money on pills like that… there is no such thing as a wonder pill, just change your diet and exercise more, and take vitamins. Vitamins are considered a dietary supplement… and all that means, is you take it combind with your exercise and diet.. and it gives you more of the healthy things you need in your body! Hope that helps you save money!
Can someone please give some advise as to weight loss recipe for a person living in west africa?
March 9th, 2010I am trying to loose weight but all recipes i come across online contain ingridents that are not easily available or are too expensive here in Nigeria. It is a bit difficult to find variety when the staple food around here is rice, yam, cassava and generally carbohydrate. All i get to eat is basmati rice (someone said it has less starch, i hope its true), beans, vegetable and fruits, this is getting a bit boring. Breakfast is ok cos i have variety of cereal like oat, weetabix, all bran, fruit & fibre e.t.c. Dinner is usually soup or fruit or vegetable (again). Am looking forward to some interesting menus to break the boredom that the diet has become.
did you ever try nigerian food? No?
Neither have the nigerians.
Better health and weight loss plans?
March 9th, 2010Honestly, I want to lose a good amount of weight because I realized I am a beautiful girl and with a kick ass bod maybe a model? Anyways, it would be good for me. I am between 5′8 and 5′9 and weigh 140. I have ‘love handles’ and most my weight is in my legs, especially my thighs. I know there is no such thing as spot reduction, but any particular exercises to help? I eat well and have already devised a better eating plan, although tips are welcome.

how to make your own weight loss plan for a teen?
March 9th, 2010i’m 14 years old
5′4” tall
180 lbs.
i want to weigh around 120-130
how do i make a weight loss plan that will work well resulting in me weighing about 120 by december of 2009?
any suggestions or plans are welcomed and very helpful
thanks
I’m in the same boat.
I’m 16 and weigh 180.
My new years resolution
(starting tomorrow though)
is to loose weight and be 120-130
I am going to eat less and watch what I eat…
Kick out all soda and anything else and start drinking tea and water and those crystal light 5 calorie things, if you dont like drinking water… some people don’t like my little brother.
Eat more fruit and veggies, try to stay away from a lot of carbs like breads. Try to switch to wheat bread instead of white.
Another thing is to keep a book of what you eat and use
mypyramid.com to calculate your calorie intake, making sure it’s in the right place not too high or too low.
Eating breakfast is another thing, I NEVER used to eat braekfast, but if you do it raises your motablism and you burn fat more.
Work out at least 30 minutes a day, you can break it up into two 15 minute sessions or whatever you’d like.
Try to get friends or family into helping you as well. My mom helps me out by ketching me when I try to cheat, ha. Or I go on walks with my friends.. anything to stay active. Get invloved in a sport.
Last but not least weight lifting!!! It’s pretty easy to do and the more muscle you build the more you burn IN YOUR SLEEP! =D
If all else fails, you can always do what I do as a fall back plan, Slim fast, it’s really simple shakes and bars and it even suggests things on the packages!

What plan should I stick to for healthy weight loss?
March 9th, 2010Hi! My doctor said I’m close to being at risk of being overweight. I’m 13 years old and I am 5 foot 4 inches tall. I’m not really fat but I’ could be skinnier so I just started at about 137 pounds. In just a couple of days, I’ve gone down to 134 pounds. Please give me some advice and support! Thanks! <3
Please remember to be very careful about not getting enough nutrients! At any age, people need to be extremely careful to get enough nutrients. In fact, you should ask your parents/guardians about getting a multivitamin specifically for growing teenagers like you. Also, you should make sure to talk to your doctor about whatever plan you choose, since doctor’s really know their stuff! Assuming you don’t have any food allergies or dietary restrictions, one of the best things you can do is to include some low fat or non-fat dairy products like milk to give you calcium and vitamin D. Milk is especially important to help your bones grow when you are young. Also, remember to eat your vegetables and fruits!
You could basically never gain weight eating vegetables and fruits. They are simply not very calorie dense, but they are nutrient dense! They give you huge amounts of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, which is awesome! So, whatever you do, please don’t skimp on things like protein, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. In fact, the only things you should totally skip are things like candy bars, soda, chips, and other junk foods. The reason why they are bad is because they have a large number of calories and little or no nutrients!
Water is essential! Drink plenty of water every day! Not drinking water can make your stomach hurt, make you dizzy, make you tired, and make you feel awful! Always drink water whenever you feel thirsty! It is much better to drink water than to drink soda! If you want to drink something besides water, you should drink juices like orange juice or vegetable juice.
So, the most important things to remember is to always have vegetables, fruit, dairy (unless you have an allergy), and water! Making sure you have enough protein (meat, soy, nuts, and beans) and some complex carbohydrates (pasta, rice, etc; whole grain or brown is best) and a little bit of good fat (nuts, beans, olive oil, olives) is also important. Basically, it is best to eat lots of different foods, especially fruits/vegetables. The only foods you can totally stop eating for good are sodas, chips, candy, and other junk food.
Now, you can start writing down the food you eat and how much you eat into a journal. Then, you can take this journal with you to the doctor. The doctor can help tell you if you are eating in a healthy way. Please remember that you definitely need to eat! When people stop eating, or eat very little food, their bodies become very frail and unhealthy. Not to mention, people that lose weight by eating too little almost always gain that weight back plus some extra! Instead of not eating, simply eat more of the foods that are natural and healthy, and less junk food!
Fat Loss Diet Meal Plan Help?
March 9th, 2010I want to lose about 4-5% Body Fat without losing any muscle, Do i need to keep my protein intake high ? or just normal amount to not lose any muscle, and just eat a low carb diet to lose fat?
Fat calories need to be >65% of total calories for the body to burn fat as it’s fuel source (including body fat) when protein is adequate. If protein is excessive, fat calories need to be >80% of total calories for the body to burn fat as it’s fuel source (including body fat) otherwise, the protein will be converted to (a very inefficient) fuel.
If you eat protein without sufficient fuel calories from fats or carbs, then you convert dietary protein to fuel leaving no protein for cellular needs, forcing the body to catabolize it’s own lean tissues. Carbs may be optional, but fuel calories are not but they can come from fat or carbs, but not protein. There are not enough calories in fruits & vegs to fuel the body.
If you don’t keep your calories high enough, the body will strip it’s own lean tissue for nutrition. Although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier to accumulate fat in the future (since all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories will be gone).
Protein is a very inefficient fuel to use exclusively for long term & the byproducts of the conversion to fuel can be dangerous if they overwhelm the body faster than the body can clear out the nitrogen & ammonia..
Just for example – Someone asked "what if" about a diet of 500g of pure protein (2000 calories a day)
500g protein with no fat would be fatal. Fat is essential but protein without fat will cause diarrhea & then death. So this next bit is only hypothetically speaking.
500g of protein only would turn the protein into a fuel source and not be able to be used for tissue repairs & cellular regeneration. So although you would think 500g of protein would be sufficient for these needs, it would be converted to a very inefficient fuel source with a dangerous buildup of nitrogen & ammonia (byproducts of gluconeogenesis). The body can handle some of these byproducts but not large quantities for long term. So in essence, all this protein would be processed as fuel and the body would STILL have to catabolize it’s own lean tissues for a protein source. 100% of the protein would be needed to convert to 58% glucose – it would be equal to fueling the body with 1160 calories of carbs and NO protein (IF your only ingestion was 2000 calories (500g) in pure protein).
It’s confusing to eat SO much protein and have none bioavailable but your body requires FUEL calories (which can come from fat OR carbs or both) AND protein.
BUT if you ate more than sufficient protein with more than sufficient dietary fat calories AND controlled carbs to less than 9grams per hour. (Maximum carbs would be 144grams day or 576 calories – the balance of fuel calories would HAVE to be from dietary fats – at 9 calories per gram)
As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn’t gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow sex hormones (testosterone in males) & human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean tissue will be gained even without exercise.
from the article below -
Numerous current studies show that dieters who follow high-protein low-carb strategies–even plans with higher fat intake–lose more fat and maintain or gain more muscle mass than dieters who rely on higher carb diets.
Yes, you read that right–many dieters actually gained muscle mass without working out, simply by eating a high-protein diet. This is due to several factors. First, amino acids from protein drive muscle growth. When you consume a high-protein meal, amino acids from the protein travel to muscle cells and actually initiate the processes that cause muscle growth.

It takes awhile to convert the body from being fueled by glucose to being fueled by fat but it does convert. Low carb marathon runners don’t "hit the wall" with mid race fuel changeovers. It’s not being fueled by fat that slows them down, it’s the fuel conversion period.
This study:

seems to suggest that after one has become fat adapted, endurance exercise performance returns to normal, but sprint performance remains poor. The suggested reason is that this type of exercise can not be fueled by fat, it must be fueled by glucose.
